Does your community have resources for Seniors?

Over 25% of seniors in their 60s say they are not confident that their communities will have the resources and services they need to lead a healthy and independent life over the next five to 10 years.   There are many organizations and agencies to provide services if you know where to look. The network of villages is a great place to start.  If you don’t know about the villages it is a movement started in 2006 in the Beacon Hill community of Boston. It was born of a desire of Beacon Hill residents to age and remain in their own home. As they faced the challenges of aging in place, they began to look for solutions to remaining in their own homes. Beacon Hill Village was born from the desire to age in place and to provide a structure to allow that to happen. Since 2006 the village movement has become a national movement with villages located throughout the country.  The website for the Villages of Kensington is VillagesofKensingtonmd.org  In addition there are organizations such as GROWS (Grass Roots Organization for the Well-being of Seniors) www.growsmc.org, and Aging Network Services agingnetworkservices.com.

The best place to start within the county government is the Department of Health and Humans Services Aging and Disability Resources Unit.  They have a whole host of services available.  You can find them at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/HHS-Program/Program.aspx?id=ADS/ADSADSResourceUnit-p179.html.

I know if can be difficult to maneuver through options and resources and I hope this list helps.
