Protect yourself from scams

One thing that really makes me angry is when scammers target older folks. According to aginginplace.org fraudulent telemarketers direct anywhere from 56% to 80% of their calls at older adults.  AARP has a wonderful article on some ways you can protect yourself from these thieves; 6 Ways to Protect Yourself From Telemarketing Fraud and Phone Scams (aarp.org).  A quick highlight is

1.    Don’t answer calls from people you don’t personally know.  Let it go to voice mail.  If they are real they will leave a message.

2.    Give them NO information.  If you didn’t initiate the call don’t answer their questions.

3.    Call them back.  For example if they say they are from your bank tell them you will call them back but don’t use the number they provide you.

4.    Stay Alert.  Even if you initiate the call check the company’s credentials.

5.    Take your time, don’t let them pressure you into making a quick decision. If it is legit now it will be legit in a few days.

6.    Be part of the solution.  If you have been or a target of a scammer report them.

In addition to phone scammers there are people that will target you within your home offering to do lawn maintenance, tree work, gutter cleaning etc.  Before hiring anyone check references, ask for referrals and don’t hire companies that “happen to be in the neighborhood.  If you are looking for a vendor check out my recommendations at        Marilyn Emery Homes/blog/2019/9/13/vendor-list or give me a call.
